The math
From two timestamps to decimal hours.
Formula
worked minutes = (clock-out − clock-in) − break
decimal hours = worked minutes ÷ 60
17:30 − 9:00 = 510 min − 30 = 480 → 480 ÷ 60 = 8.00When the clock-out time is smaller than the clock-in time, 24 hours are added before subtracting — that is what makes overnight shifts like 22:00 → 06:00 compute as 8 hours rather than an error.

How do I convert clock times to decimal hours?
Subtract the start time from the end time, subtract any unpaid break, then divide the remaining minutes by 60. Working 9:00 to 17:30 minus a 30-minute break is 8.5 − 0.5 = 8 decimal hours.
What if the shift crosses midnight?
The calculator detects when the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time and wraps past midnight automatically — a 22:00 → 06:00 shift correctly totals 8 hours.
Should breaks be deducted before converting?
Yes, if they are unpaid. Deducting in minutes before the decimal conversion keeps the result exact.
